Technical explanation

On average, approximately 75% of engine wear in a road car occurs when the engine is cold, that is, below its normal operating temperature. This means that if it were possible to completely eliminate the time the engine operates while cold, wear would be reduced by up to four times.

Although it is not possible to eliminate this period entirely, it can be reduced to a minimum by using this thermostatic sandwich plate.

Until the oil reaches 80 °C, the thermostat remains closed and the oil does not circulate through the oil cooler, preventing premature cooling and allowing it to reach operating temperature as quickly as possible. From 80 °C onwards, the thermostat progressively opens, forcing the oil to circulate through the cooler and keeping it within its optimal operating range.

Without this system, in addition to taking longer to warm up, on cold or rainy days and under moderate driving conditions the oil may not exceed 60 °C, which results in very high engine wear.

Thanks to this thermostat, it is possible to use large oil coolers without the risk of overcooling, ensuring that the oil is always maintained at its ideal temperature, between 85 and 105 °C.


Installation

Installation is straightforward: simply remove the original sandwich plate (located between the oil filter and the engine block) and install this unit in its place.

  • When used with our Gr.A engine mounts, no modification is required.

  • When using standard engine mounts, it will be necessary to lightly trim one side of the mount (see last photo). No further adaptation is required.

The oil inlet and outlet ports use 1/2" BSP threads. We offer fittings to adapt to almost any size (AN8, AN10, M20, M18, etc.).

Not compatible with the original M18x1.5 thread. Please enquire about adapter availability.


Usage recommendation

Installation of this MOCAL thermostatic sandwich plate in the standard system is not recommended for the following reasons:

  • The original system already performs oil-to-coolant heat exchange and includes its own thermostat, making an additional oil thermostat redundant.

  • The hoses in the standard system have a reduced internal diameter, which can cause restrictions in oil flow and may limit engine oil pressure.
